IBPS RRB Exam Pattern 2026
The exam pattern differs for Office Assistant/Officer Scale I versus Officer Scale II/III, and the official notification specifies subject-wise marks and timing for every stage.
Office Assistant and Officer Scale I: Preliminary Examination
Both posts sit a Preliminary Examination (objective) first.
| Test | Questions | Max Marks | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reasoning | 40 | 40 | 25 minutes |
| Numerical Ability (Office Assistant) / Quantitative Aptitude (Officer Scale I) | 40 | 40 | 20 minutes |
| Total | 80 | 80 | 45 minutes |
Candidates must qualify in both tests by securing the minimum cut-off marks. An adequate number of candidates in each category — based on requirement — is then shortlisted for the Online Main Examination.
Office Assistant and Officer Scale I: Main Examination
The Main Examination is identical in structure for both posts, differing only in the fifth section (Numerical Ability for Office Assistant, Quantitative Aptitude for Officer Scale I).
| Test | Questions | Max Marks | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reasoning | 40 | 50 | 30 minutes |
| Computer Knowledge | 40 | 20 | 15 minutes |
| General Awareness | 40 | 40 | 15 minutes |
| English / Hindi Language | 40 | 40 | 30 minutes |
| Numerical Ability / Quantitative Aptitude | 40 | 50 | 30 minutes |
| Total | 200 | 200 | 120 minutes |
Candidates can opt for either the English or the Hindi Language test in the Main Examination.
Officer Scale II and III: Single Level Examination
Officer Scale II and III candidates do not appear for a Preliminary Examination — they go directly to a Single Level Examination.
Officer Scale II – General Banking Officer and Officer Scale III share the same structure:
| Test | Questions | Max Marks | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reasoning | 40 | 50 | 30 minutes |
| Computer Knowledge | 40 | 20 | 15 minutes |
| Financial Awareness | 40 | 40 | 15 minutes |
| English / Hindi Language | 40 | 40 | 30 minutes |
| Quantitative Aptitude & Data Interpretation | 40 | 50 | 30 minutes |
| Total | 200 | 200 | 120 minutes |
Officer Scale II – Specialist Cadre (IT Officer, Law Officer, CA, Treasury Manager, Marketing Officer, Agricultural Officer) has a longer paper with a dedicated Professional Knowledge section:
| Test | Questions | Max Marks | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Professional Knowledge | 40 | 40 | 30 minutes |
| Reasoning | 40 | 40 | 30 minutes |
| Financial Awareness | 40 | 40 | 15 minutes |
| English / Hindi Language | 40 | 20 | 30 minutes |
| Computer Knowledge | 40 | 20 | 15 minutes |
| Quantitative Aptitude & Data Interpretation | 40 | 40 | 30 minutes |
| Total | 240 | 200 | 150 minutes |
All test papers (except the English Language test) are available in Hindi and English; Office Assistant and Officer Scale I candidates in several states can also opt for a regional-language version — check Annexure I of the official notification for your state's options.
Negative Marking in IBPS RRB Exam
Negative marking applies to the Preliminary, Main and Single Level Examinations. One-fourth (0.25) of the marks assigned to a question is deducted for every wrong answer. There is no penalty for questions left unanswered — so avoid blind guessing when you're not reasonably confident about an answer.
IBPS RRB Cut-Off and Scoring
- Office Assistant — must score the minimum cut-off in each Main Examination test to be considered for provisional allotment; only marks from the Main Examination count toward the final merit list.
- Officer Scale I — must score the minimum cut-off in each Main Examination test to be shortlisted for interview; typically up to three times the declared vacancies (per category, per state) are called for interview, subject to availability.
- Officer Scale II and III — must score the minimum cut-off in each test of the Single Level Examination to be shortlisted for interview, under the same three-times-vacancy principle.
Scoring in individual tests alone isn't enough — candidates also need a sufficiently high total score in order of merit to be called for interview or provisional allotment. Where the exam is held across multiple sessions, scores are normalized using the equi-percentile method.
IBPS RRB Interview (Officer Posts Only)
Officer Scale I, II and III candidates who clear the Main/Single Level Examination are called for a Common Interview, coordinated by the Nodal Regional Rural Bank with NABARD and IBPS.
- Total interview marks: 100
- Minimum qualifying marks: 40% (35% for SC/ST/OBC/PwBD candidates)
- Weightage: Online Examination 80% + Interview 20%
A candidate must qualify both the Online Examination and the Common Interview, and rank sufficiently high in the combined merit list, to be shortlisted for provisional allotment. Requests to change the interview date, venue or centre are not entertained.
IBPS RRB Selection Process 2026
Selection depends on the post:
- Office Assistant — Preliminary Examination + Main Examination; final selection based on Main Examination performance and provisional allotment.
- Officer Scale I — Preliminary Examination + Main Examination + Common Interview.
- Officer Scale II and III — Single Level Examination + Common Interview.
For Officer posts, final selection uses an 80:20 weightage between the Online Examination and the Interview.
IBPS RRB Application Fee 2026
- ₹175 — SC/ST/PwBD candidates (and eligible ESM/DESM candidates for Office Assistant)
- ₹850 — all other candidates
The fee is inclusive of GST; applicable bank transaction charges are borne by the candidate.
